Mank2020

Where to begin? I guess let’s focus on the good aspects of Mank.  It felt very immersive. Like you were actually watching an old movie. The audio sounded spot on. A lot of shots and cinematography were greatly influenced straight from Citizen Kane. They really nailed that aspect of it.  I’ve heard some people say this is Oscar bait. I do see how it could be since it’s a movie about Hollywood, about one of the most beloved Hollywood films, and politics. While it might be, I don’t think it is. But I will predict that this won’t be a crowd pleaser and won’t be a beloved film amongst the masses. With this feeling so immersive and actually feeling like an old film I think that most audiences will think it is and not like it. Like, I can appreciate it, but I know my family members would watch and get bored as they just aren’t fans of older Hollywood films. But let’s say I do get them to watch it, and the old factor isn’t the thing that scares them off. I still think though they they wouldn’t have an appreciation for it, since this film requires 1) for you to have seen Citizen Kane to understand what’s going on and 2) have an understanding and appreciation the impact Citizen Kane had on the film industry moving forward. Oh and if you’re reading this before watching, I’d also suggest a quick google search in MGM studios in the 30’s. As well as Upton Sinclair and the politic landscape during that time. If you don’t have this knowledge I can see this film being very boring and hard to understand. For these reasons I don’t think it will end up making the Top 250 list unfortunately, but hopefully.  Overall I liked it, but it didn’t have as much of an impact as I thought it was going to have on me. Looking forward to future viewing of Mank. Even with all that I do think it’s been my favorite for 2020.
