There is literally no one like Imtiaz. No one. Calling him “Yash Chopra of our times” is not doing him any good. He has created his own brand and I don’t think many are even remotely close to him except few names. What a MASTERPIECE this. From the way it was researched to making matured romance the part of one of our worst times in the history, is like playing with fire. But Imtiaz managed it so bloody well. Whatever was going on in Naseeruddin’s character’s mind throughout the film was really something so interesting to watch. His twisted recollection of those unfortunate incidents, his love and his way of longing for that “One last time” is affecting the people around him in real time, including his own grandson and son. Family history, curse and what not was explored. It’s a very tricky film to tackle but how beautifully it comes together towards the end. The whole addition of Mars, the moon and Martians as an analogy to the perpetrators was so Imtiaz-ish. In a sense, It was like a poem trying to make sense of its meaning. Diljit’s character is us, the viewers. We were taking it all in with him and slowly making sense of it. Imtiaz rarely does anything straightforward in most of his films. Messy yet deliciously non-linear writing and connecting every bit of it in a very Imtiaz-ish way. That ending is what made this one of Imtiaz’s best films. Just wow. ARR’s music and Irshad’s lyrics brings an extra charm to this narration. One of ARR’s best albums undoubtedly. Vedang and Sharvari are really good. Old school romance was perfectly portrayed. But it’s completely Naseeruddin’s show. My god. What a legend. So real and so convincing. (Don’t make me talk about Banitha’s acting please 🙏🏻) In short, this is Imtiaz’s near perfect film and really super satisfied as his admirer. What a film.
