Let's Scare Jessica to Death1971

I read that Netflix plans to require it's characters to repeat the plot every few minutes so the tech-addicted masses can follow along to whatever shitty show the algorithm forces down their throats. Contrast that with Let's Scare Jessica to Death, where the filmmaker, John Hancock, and his budget of 250k, throws you into the world without exposition or an origin story. We don't know Jessica's mental illness but we see how it's impacted her. Hancock shows us instead of having Jessica repeat her diagnosis every 2 minutes. The film also glides in and out of surrealism, causing you to question what you see. And whether the ghostly visions are real is ultimately left up to the viewer. John Hancock trusted that audiences had enough smarts to understand basic concepts of storytelling like allegory, metaphor, and symbolism to be able to interpret and take meaning from his film. You may even indirectly relate to the characters and develop empathy for people struggling with mental health. Wow 😲 all that from a low budget exploitation film. Unlike John Hancock, Netflix thinks you are too dumb to follow a surface level plot, let alone a deeper subtext. We should watch more movies like Let's Scare Jessica to Death and less movies like Love & Gelato (2022).
