Big Death Stranding vibes.  Maybe it does bite off more than it can chew for the planet of the apes or the land before time. But it does it with heart and sincerity. A lot of things feel very convenient. They get out of every scrape and more often than not find someone who is willing to help them.  But thinking about it, I feel that is not to the films’ detriment but to its benefit. At the core, this film is about good defeating the evil in man. It’s simple but clearly still something humanity needs.  I think with a broader scope, the movie could have been stronger, but it chooses to focus on one family’s journey, and it still does a good job at that.  SPOILERS I wasn’t as moved by John Garrity’s death as I was by the moment the son refers to at the time from earlier in the film. One of their friends had died, and after burying her, John Garrity says a prayer over her. And the son asks why people do that. Pray for the dead. And he explains that it’s tradition, like placing coins on the eyes to pay the ferryman to take their souls to the afterlife.  And the son says, “Even if they don’t believe in heaven?” “Even if they don’t believe in heaven.” That is what humanity is. That is kindness.  Recently, a horrible, senseless tragedy occurred in Minneapolis with the death and murder of Renee Good. The amount of people I have seen standing by her murderer or even excusing it, saying “she should have just listened.” is insane. Actually insane. Murdered by a man representing the federal government, and the government has turned and twisted reality to blame the victim for her own death.  Over the past century, there have been countless things people have protested that someone could still defend. Now they are defending the indefensible. And doing it the only way they can. With blatant, obvious lies.  How can the same people who scream about small government and Second Amendment rights stand by while a totalitarian regime takes over our nation?  How can the people who scream about Christian values stand by and laugh while people are murdered and persecuted?  We need to be kinder to our fellow man. And if that’s not enough, we need violent, systematic change.
