Gamera vs. Guiron1969

59/100 After the last two Gamera movies proved disappointing, I was a little hesitant about returning to Gamera vs. Guiron. However, this movie, while not perfect, was a pleasant little surprise after the tedium of Gamera vs. Viras. Let's start with the stuff I don't like. The effects, as usual for these movies, look like the Taiwanese ripoff of a better movie. Along with that, the kids in these ones might just be the most annoying yet, and surrounded by unfunny comic relief characters like Officer "Cornjob" Kendo, the human element continues to be quite poor. However, this movie manages to hold its own through the childlike imagination it shows. There are multiple great scenes with the kids exploring or being chased around on the alien planet, which makes for a nice change of pace from the more Earth-centered stories you usually see. The villains are generic aliens, as was usual. Cold War fears of invasion really got to people. Here, they're not too well-realized, and they repeat the glowing eyes thing from the Virians, which still looks bad. None of that matters, though, because the real villain of this movie is Guiron. I love this guy so much, he might honestly be my favourite of these Gamera villains. He's a great concept executed with the goofiness he deserves, while still being allowed some brutality. This is a very difficult movie to discern my opinion on, because it switches from being outright annoying to very fun on a moment's notice. However, it has enough goofy charm to not be a total loss, plus its the first time I've heard Gamera's theme song pop up in one of these. Overall, there is more good than bad, but its slight enough that overall, this movie's just kind of alright. I might revisit this one later, but compared to other Kaiju films, its just one of the world's tallest dwarfs.
