86/100 Yet another case where I check out something with a large fandom and realize just how many memes escaped containment. However, even if you set aside its iconicity, this is still a miracle among musicals. First off, the musical is obviously based on a historical figure, and one I knew relatively little about, so it added an extra layer of enjoyment to learn more about Alexander Hamilton through this. However, what I found even more impressive is the way Lin Manuel Miranda took these historical events and managed to make an amazing story out of it. Both in writing and performance, Miranda manages to make the main character feel complex yet also make him work as a good protagonist. It helps that the side cast and even minor characters are similarly well-written and acted, making it hard for me to point out a single character I didn't like. Of course, you can't review a musical without reviewing the songs. While rap isn't a genre I'm a huge fan of, it's use here gives the whole show a sense of high energy and, just like the characters, it's hard to point out a song I dislike, though "You'll be Back", sung by Jonathan Groff as King George III was my clear favourite. Overall, this is a musical I have very few critiques on. While there were a few points where I wasn't interested (and though the audio on the recording I watched was messed up on "Burn"), it remains an interesting and intriguing experience throughout. Its amazing songs help propell an already good story into greater heights, making it a great musical overall.
