According to legend, in the moors of Polissya lies an island that one can't reach through regular means. The only surfire way to get to the island is through a dangerous and unpredictable pool known as the Eye of the Abyss. But, the only ones that can enter the abyss without dying are the ones who have lost their faith. Sometime during the mid-1530s, caligrapher Mykhailo Vasylevych wishes to find this island and its sole inhabitant, a hermit with supposedly mystical powers named Mykyta, in order to retain the inspiration that he feels his works have lost. He is joined on this quest by Sozont Trypilskii, a deacon from Kyiv with an interest in investigating the claims of the supernatural in the region, and Pavlo Hutianskii, a young monk from a small village in the Carpathians seeking a cure for his epilepsy.
