Few minutes in and honestly when I got to know the killer is using hypnosis shit to make them kill people, I was like I have seen this many times. But Kurosawa proved me absolutely wrong as the movie slowly progressed into something so deep and so existential, it’s almost horrifying to say the least. Brilliantly directed long take scenes set the film’s atmosphere so well and so detailed yet it’s not explicitly detailed as in explaining everything. Some of the dialogues though was so terrifyingly thought provoking that made me think, we as a people maybe morally right but expansion of one self maybe similar to even a serial killer. The killer even says “All the things that used to be inside me...now they're all outside”. He’s just seeing himself in all of the victims and their problems. He just takes them to another level under hypnotic suggestion and makes them kill people. Movie simply tells somewhere in all of us evil person is there un-triggered considering our importance towards moral values. Maybe the detective always wanted his wife to die as she was his burden or he was different than others? All the people serial killer hypnotised had problems with someone or something, that made them kill and later couldn’t tell properly why they did it even though they had reasons like jealousy, hatred etc But even if you manage to hypnotize someone.. you can't change their basic moral sense. A person who thinks murder is evil won't kill anyone even under hypnotic suggestion  What if we never had a basic moral sense and this guy hypnotised us into killing people? They have made it look like an evil mind is contagious even after serial killer’s death. So I believe in the end protagonist didn’t hypnotise the waitress but she consciously wanted to kill someone. So is it saying that without hypnosis itself she was behaving this way? Maybe? Or maybe she was really hypnotised? Great open ending. TERRIFIC absolutely TERRIFC movie this by Kiyoshi Kurosawa.
