85/100 This is the best movie to ever sell itself as a true story when it's actually mostly fiction. You can't really blame Spielberg and the crew, and you actually have to admire the conman. At least he now has a really good movie based on the stories he made up. The story here is really good, playing out almost like a 1960s spy movie at times, but with enough moments to make it feel more grounded while still being entertaining. It's really fun to watch Frank pull off his frauds. There's also a ton of little things I like. There's a lot of comedy here, to the point it might be one of the funniest movies so far, including lines such as "Frank...you're not a Lutheran?" or the fact he doesn't even bother changing his first name. John Williams' score is great as usual here. I feel like every Spielberg review has a designated "John Williams' score" section where I say it's good, but I can't help it, the guy's just such a good composer and improves so many of these movies with his score. It's no different here, especially with the snazzy spy-like theme over the opening credits. The movie is also helped by great performances. Leonardo DiCaprio does a great job as Frank, helping the audience root for this sleazy conman. Tom Hanks also does a great job as the police officer Carl Hanratty, and I love how the humourless cop finds himself turning casual with the guy who he's chasing across the world. I feel this movie's a little lesser with the "true story" label, especially since now it's glorifying a guy who isn't all that great in reality, but I still love it. It's a great movie with a great story, even if it doesn't have that much basis in reality.
