In my headcanon, Woodstock 99 exposed toxic masculinity for what it is but, as we now know, it took another two decades to actually do something about it. But it's not like nobody did anything early on. In fact, I argue Bridget Jones - the character - is a response to all that creepy, aggressive behavior as personified in Hugh Grant's Daniel. She's adept at playing by the mens rules but Bridget doesn't get her shit together until she rejects Daniel at the blue soup bday party and lives for herself. There's still another hour of Bridget pining after the Mark Darcy but hey it's 2001. And btw, the story doesn't need the "Bridget Jones is fat" subplot. But again - 2001
