Zemeckis-fest So the three movies following Zemeckis’ mocap era feel like a continuation of his work in the late 90s, but unfortunately, they just aren’t as interesting and I think fall victim to the time they came out in.  There is a good movie that is trying to come out of this, and I think if it was made in a different decade and/or with a different director, it could have been quite excellent. Spies to lovers with some suspicion and uncertainty. But I don’t know if it’s the plot itself or just the writing that makes the execution less interesting. The quality of the camera work is no doubt to blame as well with that 2010s flatness. However, there were still one or two well-composed shots, but not enough to carry the film.  It’s still watchable, no doubt, but dry and a little boring. I think in some ways, having similar problems to The Walk, where there’s not as much here as Zemeckis thinks there is. But there is a timelessness, and as I said before, perhaps in a different decade, this would have played better.  I think Brad Pitt feels especially bland here, like he’s just there for the paycheck. But it’s also a pretty low-energy movie, so maybe he’s just matching the vibe.  Overall, just meh. Better than The Walk but not as good as Flight, just falling somewhere in the middle.
