I was afraid that after mostly appreciating Faces instead of really liking it, that Cassavetes just wasn’t going to be for me. I was wrong. What’s done here is an example of one of cinema’s most interesting ability: to be an empathy generator.  I felt so much for Mabel. She is, like so many of us, just trying her best to be good to others. But it seems like she just wasn’t trained to do it in the language that the rest of the world would recognize and I can really feel that.
