My dad told me before watching this that this was one of the most historically accurate movies of all time. That just made everything hit so much harder. This is maybe one of the most horrifying movies I have ever seen. I was shaking with fear for almost every moment. Every scene had my attention, every laceration had a tear, and every performance broke me down. I have not been moved by anything like this, since Schindler's List. I also want to take a moment and discuss my recent few school days. Don't worry, I have a reason. For the past month of school, my English class and I have been discussing basically nothing but racism, sexism, and analyzing them both so incredibly much, that it really is no longer an English class. Which, I really do love discussing these topics. I love learning about Martin Luther King Jr and Malcom X and the impact that they had on the world, but my teacher, is making me feel really bad about myself every time I go into class. All I feel is total humiliation and sadness for being a white male, as it feels sometimes. It almost feels as if that's my teacher's goal. And it isn't just me, others people in my class feel it too. Just almost wanting to apologize for being white, for being a male, for not being able to "understand" what members of the LGBTQ+ go through. I don't know, I just feel bad all of the time and feel as if something is being taught wrong. Not, look at these people who may look different from you, and see how they grow and succeed despite the discrimination against them. It's, you should feel bad because minorities have it so much worse than you and they can sometimes barely succeed while you do absolutely nothing about it. The class is making me feel like I am racist, like I am sexist, like I am homophobic. I don't think I am racist, but it feels hard to tell sometimes. Like that I'm not doing enough and others have and always will do more than me. It's not put others down to bring others up. It's bring others up, so that everyone can be brought up. And that's what this movie did. It didn't make me feel guilty for being white. It didn't make me feel like I was lesser, while bringing others up. It told a beautifully, convulsing story about a free man who then became a slave. No putting down, just tears and sadness. Kinda rambling, but I it's how I feel
